May/June, 2013

Winter is gone, Spring has sprung and soon the lazy days of Summer will be upon us! In the midst of your Summer activities, remember to continue making time for your fitness routine. This will enhance your strength and endurance and ultimately your enjoyment of all you do. In addition it reinforces your commitment to ongoing overall wellness.

May is “National Fitness Month.” The Ranch Fitness Center & Spa will be actively promoting this with our “Bring a Friend” offer. Any current member may bring a guest at no charge for one trial visit (no limit on number of guests). The guest will be required to check in at the front desk and complete a brief registration form.

We recognize fitness member Linda Ford who has set a new record for sponsoring new members. Linda has sponsored 11 members since she joined in May of 2012. As a part of our ongoing Member Referral Program, she has received 11 months of paid dues! Way to go, Linda!

In honor of “National Fitness Month,” Ranch fitness members will receive 20% off any salon or spa service during the month of May (that’s 10% above the usual member discount). With this special offer, we hope you will treat yourself to a day at the spa or to a relaxing massage. We thank you if you have used spa and salon services in the past, and if not, we hope you will try a service soon. We really appreciate your business!

The months of January through April have been busy here at The Ranch, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we experience growth. As a result of this growth, The Ranch Fitness Center & Spa will be doing an expansion of the facility sometime this summer. The expansion will include enlarging the locker rooms and adding more group exercise rooms. Stay tuned for further information as it becomes available. This is an exciting time to be a member at The Ranch!

Remember, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are just around the corner and nothing says “I love you” like a little pampering. Gift cards are available online as well as at the front desk.

Last but not least, and this one you can tell all your friends about, the spa and salon will be offering a free Express Manicure with any color treatment during May and June.

Massage as Medicine

Massage therapy has been around for a long time, and for very good reason. Although some might argue that massage is simply a luxury, recent evidence is proving that there are tremendous health benefits to be had from getting a massage. Perhaps that’s why massage therapy services have become so much more assessable in recent times. If you have never had a massage we encourage you to discover why it can be so beneficial.

The health benefits of a massage go beyond relaxation. A massage therapist uses pressing, rubbing and manipulation techniques on skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Tendons and ligaments are the connective tissues that hold the muscle and joint together. Muscles, tendons and ligaments are all susceptible to tension, stress and pain. Massage can help to alleviate all of these. There have been many theories about how a massage works. Improving circulation and releasing toxins are a few common thoughts but until recently there has been little scientific evidence. According to the Wall Street Journal’s article ‘Don’t Call it Pampering: Massage Wants to Be Medicine’ (March 2012) one study found that a single 45-minute massage led to a reduction of stress hormones, a decrease in proteins related to inflammation and a boost in white blood cells. And a small study published in the journal of Science Translational Medicine (February 2012) cited that a 10-minute massage promoted muscle recovery after exercise. This could be especially helpful if you are strength training or taking our new Tabata classes!

This recent surge in scientific interest has helped to shed light on the host of healthful massage benefits. The key is to choose the massage style that is right for you. A ten (10) minute chair massage is great way to promote muscle recovery, release tension and expose you to the benefits of massage. Try a fully clothed ten (10) minute chair massage for $10 to determine the best massage style. The Ranch Fitness Center & Spa has a wide menu of massages to choose from, and during the month of May all fitness members will receive 20% off all spa and salon services!

A body in balance performs better…so what does it take to gain balance in your body? The word balance has several meanings with reference to the human body. First is the physical equilibrium of our body, the ability to retain our balance. Second is the balance in our musculo-skeletal system. And lastly, one might argue that the most important balance of all is that of mental and emotional steadiness.

Every joint in the body has muscles attached that work in unison to generate movement. The balance in the musculo-skeletal system requires that the muscles at each joint are similar in strength and flexibility. Musculo-skeletal imbalances occur when one side of this muscular relationship becomes either overly tight and short or overly weak and loose. These imbalances can occur for a variety of reasons: over training certain muscle groups, lifestyle/professional requirements and spending long periods of time in stationary positions (sitting and driving).  A good example of a common muscular imbalance in the body occurs at the hip joint. When sitting for long periods of time the muscles in the front of the hip (hip flexors) become tight and short and the muscles at the back of the hip (gluteus maximus) become weak and loose.  When this occurs the hip joint’s function is degraded and it pulls the body out of proper alignment. When posture and joint movement are compromised so is our physical equilibrium…our ‘balance.’

Mental and emotional steadiness is another type of balance which is addressed in our mind-body classes. Connecting the breath to the body and the mind can be a very powerful and profound experience. With a mindful approach to physical equilibrium, the musculo-skeletal relationship and mind-body connections, we can achieve a body in balance.
